Water Damage? Here is What to Do
The recent torrential rains that have pounded Houston, Texas, and surrounding areas mean extensive water damage for homes and businesses. Water damage is one of the most devastating of all damage and most certainly should be left to the professionals under any circumstances.
This does not mean you sit around and watch. There are a few things you can proactively do to protect your home and family. Here are a few solid tips that will help until the professionals arrive.
UNPLUG AND MOVE
This should be a no-brainer, but it is worth repeating. Water + electricity = bad news. Water and electricity love each other, and water is a great conductor of electricity. This means an electrical short at best to full electrocution and death at worst. If it is safe, unplug and move any devices from the water. This will protect the products and you. Wear rubber dishwashing gloves and rubber sole shoes to do this – neither will conduct electricity efficiently.
GET IT UP
Again, safety is paramount in this situation. If you so much a think there is an electrical issue, stay away from the water. If you can safely, collect as much water as possible with buckets, mops and towels. Dump water outside or down a drain if possible. A shop-Vac is a possibility, provided you pay attention to the electricity situation.
These two tips are going to help make the process easier for us and can help minimize serious damage. Again and if this is annoying you it is strictly for your safety, do not go near the water if there is a chance of electricity. Wait for us.
